I have always felt that these TV shows aimed at helping us protect ourselves actually teach the bad bad guys how to be better. Hell after all of the shows I have seen I think I could be a decent crime committer. And on the news I don’t like when they tell about this odd way that someone got caught. Why help them and others learn.
My favorite idiot thief was a guy who robbed a church but his wallet fell out while climbing out the window. Then when he got out he walked into a liquor store but thought there were two many people. He comes back from his card and writes a note for the cashier to give him all of the money. He wrote it on a piece of his mail. After he got out of jail he then went to rob a car battery store. (I can’t imagine why.) But he couldn’t get a door open so he was taking the batteriers out one-by-one through the window. It took him so long that for some reason his own car battery was dead. He got so pissed off that he started kicking his car and yelling which prompted neighbors to call the cops. Love it.

I’m not completely convinced criminals learn that much from television anyway. For example, just take a look at those pedophiles who get caught by the “To Catch a Predator” show. They even admit to have seen the show before and yet they still fall for it. Some of them even get caught by the show more than once. What a bunch of morons!
I skipped referencing crimes of impulse or addiction. Obviously the fact that you will get the electric chair does not stop killers. I have watched people get into fights in front of cops on shows. Rage overtakes common sense and that is how a lot of people get caught.

The article aboves has forensic teams complaining that CSI is teaching criminals to cover their tracts better.
And the people in “To Catch A Predator” have a addiction/impulse problem. That is different. I think career criminals have the most to gain from these shows. On top of that for many years people have complained that jail is just Super School for Criminals. All they do is talk to others who have committed crimes. The best networking a criminal can find.
One last note, Macguyver always left out one ingredient for his concoctions just so people wouldn’t replicate it.
I dont think those paedophils where stupid. They simply searched for fame and glory…
